A Simulated Collision in ALICE
The ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) detector in the Large Hadron Collider collides lead ions at enormous energies. When these ions collide, a spray of new particles is created - this is a simulation of a possible collision. Each individual particle contains a minuscule portion of energy, but thanks to the conservation of energy we know the entire energy of the system must remain constant - so the kinetic energy within the high speed particles beforehand equals the total energy of the particles afterward.
